Install guides

Put Burt on your website.

Step-by-step instructions for the site builders most firms use. None of them needs a developer.

Before you start

Two things to grab from your Burt dashboard first. Your snippet is unique to your firm, so always copy it from the dashboard rather than from this page.

  1. Add your website address. In the dashboard, open Settings → Installation (or the Websites step during setup) and add every address your site is served from under Where will your chat appear? Addresses must match exactly: if your site works both with and without www, add both, and add any staging address (for example yourfirm.wixsite.com or yourfirm.webflow.io) you want to test on. The chat will not load on an address that isn’t on the list.
  2. Copy your snippet. On the same screen (or the Install step during setup), open Prefer to paste the code yourself? and click Copy code. It is one line that looks like this:
    <script async src="…/embed.js" data-burt-key="pk_live_…"></script>

Paste the snippet in one place only. If it ends up on the page twice (for example once in your site builder and once through Google Tag Manager), only one copy is used and the browser console warns about the duplicate.

No code needed

WordPress

The Burt for WordPress plugin installs the chat and registers your site address for you.

  1. In the Burt dashboard, open Settings → Installation and click Download the plugin. (If you don’t see a download button, use the snippet method below or email us.)
  2. In your WordPress admin, go to Plugins → Add New Plugin → Upload Plugin, choose the .zip file, then click Install Now and Activate.
  3. Go to Settings → Burt Chat and click Connect your Burt account. Sign in to Burt if asked, confirm the site, and you’re sent back to WordPress with the chat switched on.

Prefer the snippet? Install a header-and-footer code plugin (such as WPCode), paste your snippet into its Footer box, and save. Avoid editing your theme files directly: a theme update overwrites them.

Wix

Wix only runs custom code on a site with a paid plan and a connected domain.

  1. In your Wix site’s dashboard, go to Settings, then find Custom Code (under Development & integrations or Advanced, depending on your dashboard version).
  2. Click + Add Custom Code and paste your snippet into the code box. Name it Burt.
  3. Under Add Code to Pages, choose All pages and Load code once.
  4. Under Place Code in, choose Body - end, then click Apply.
  5. Publish your site, then open it in a new tab to check the chat button appears.

Squarespace

Code Injection is available on Squarespace plans that include custom code (not the most basic personal tier).

  1. In your Squarespace site, open Settings → Advanced → Code Injection. (On newer dashboards it is under Website → Pages → Custom Code → Code Injection.)
  2. Paste your snippet into the Footer box.
  3. Click Save, then visit your live site to check the chat button appears.

Add both yourfirm.com and www.yourfirm.com in Burt if your Squarespace domain answers on both.

Webflow

Webflow runs custom code on sites with a paid site plan.

  1. In the Webflow dashboard, open your site’s Site settings and go to the Custom code tab.
  2. Paste your snippet into the Footer code box (the one that goes before the </body> tag) and click Save changes.
  3. Publish the site to your domain. Custom code only runs on the published site, not inside the Designer.

Testing on yourfirm.webflow.io first? Add that address in Burt too.

Google Tag Manager

If your agency manages your site through Google Tag Manager, add Burt as a tag. Your site itself needs no change.

  1. In your GTM workspace, go to Tags → New.
  2. Click Tag Configuration and choose Custom HTML. Paste your snippet into the HTML box.
  3. Click Triggering and choose All Pages.
  4. Name the tag Burt chat and click Save.
  5. Click Submit, then Publish. Use GTM’s Preview first if you want to check it fires.

Don’t also paste the snippet into the site itself. One copy, in one place.

Any other site (HTML)

For a hand-built site, or any platform that lets you edit the page’s HTML.

  1. Open the HTML for your pages, or the shared footer/template file if your site has one.
  2. Paste your snippet just before the closing </body> tag, on every page the chat should appear on.
  3. Upload or deploy the change, then reload your site to check the chat button appears.

The snippet loads async, so it doesn’t hold up the rest of your page while it loads.

Chat not showing up?

Is this exact address on your list?
Check Where will your chat appear? in the dashboard. www.yourfirm.com and yourfirm.com are different addresses, and so is any staging domain.
Is your chat live?
The chat only appears to visitors after you finish setup and go live in the dashboard.
Did your site builder publish the change?
Most builders only run custom code on the published site, and some need a paid plan for custom code at all.
